Tech support scams are gaining traction and as a result NXG has observed higher losses as these scammers gain control of bank accounts and other sensitive information. The scam works by convincing consumers that they are already at risk from a virus or other type of intrusion, and the scammer poses as tech support for a trusted organization. The scammer convinces the consumer to provide remote control of their device, and once granted access the thief can do a lot of damage very quickly. The FTC has issued this guide to help consumers understand how to identify, avoid, and report these scams.
